Opuntia microdasys

Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as the Bunny Ear Cactus, is a distinctive desert cactus with flat, oval pads arranged in a sculptural branching form. The pads are covered in tiny clusters of fine glochids rather than obvious spines, giving the plant its characteristic dotted appearance.

Native to Mexico, the Bunny Ear Cactus is an easy, architectural choice for bright rooms and sunny windowsills. Mature plants can occasionally produce yellow flowers in very bright conditions, although flowering indoors is less common.

Light & Position

Give as much bright light as possible, including several hours of direct sun where available. A sunny windowsill is ideal. Plants moved suddenly into intense summer sun may need a little time to acclimatise to avoid scorching.

Watering

Water sparingly during spring and summer, allowing the compost to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Water even less during autumn and winter, when growth slows, and never allow the pot to sit in water.

Temperature & Humidity

Prefers warm, dry indoor conditions and does not need high humidity. Keep away from cold draughts and prolonged damp conditions.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a cactus fertiliser at the recommended dilution, approximately once a month while the plant is actively growing.

Handling
