Lucky Bamboo – Dracaena sanderiana is a wonderfully sculptural houseplant with a distinctive spiral-topped stem and fresh green foliage. Despite its common name, Lucky Bamboo is not actually a bamboo at all, but a member of the Dracaena family.

Supplied at approximately 40cm+ tall and presented in a sleek water-filled tube, this elegant plant makes an unusual addition to a desk, shelf, side table or workspace. Its clean, architectural shape also makes it a particularly thoughtful gift.

Why Is It Called Lucky Bamboo?

Lucky Bamboo has long been associated with good fortune, prosperity and positive energy, particularly in Chinese and Feng Shui traditions.

The beautifully curved spiral form is created by carefully training the stem towards the light as it grows, gradually encouraging it to bend into its distinctive shape.

Is Lucky Bamboo Really Bamboo?

No. Although it has bamboo-like stems, Lucky Bamboo is actually Dracaena sanderiana, a tropical evergreen plant in the Asparagaceae family.

This means its care is much closer to other Dracaena houseplants than to true bamboo.

Light & Position

Lucky Bamboo grows best in bright, indirect light. Position it somewhere with plenty of natural daylight but protect it from prolonged strong direct sunshine, which can scorch or yellow the foliage.

It will tolerate slightly lower light levels, although growth may be slower.

Growing in Water

This plant is supplied growing decoratively in water rather than compost. Keep the roots and lower part of the stem adequately covered, topping up the water as required.

Replace or refresh the water approximately every one to two weeks to help keep it clean and fresh.

Dracaena can be sensitive to minerals and fluoride present in some tap water, so rainwater or filtered water is ideal where possible.

Temperature

Lucky Bamboo enjoys warm, stable indoor conditions. Keep it away from cold draughts, frequently opened exterior doors and direct heat from radiators.

A temperature of around 18–25°C is ideal.

Feeding

Lucky Bamboo grown in water requires very little fertiliser. If feeding, use a very dilute liquid houseplant fertiliser only occasionally during spring and summer.

Avoid overfeeding, as concentrated fertiliser can damage the roots when the plant is grown directly in water.
