Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’, commonly known as the Burgundy Rubber Plant, is a striking indoor plant with large, glossy leaves in exceptionally deep shades of green, burgundy and near-black. Fresh growth often emerges with warmer bronze-red tones before gradually deepening in colour, giving the plant a rich, sophisticated appearance.
Supplied in a 14cm nursery pot at approximately 40cm tall, ‘Abidjan’ has a strong upright habit and substantial foliage that gives it plenty of presence without taking up too much space. It works particularly well as a floor or furniture-level plant and will gradually develop into a much larger statement specimen in good conditions.
Light & Position
Give Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Good natural light encourages healthy growth and helps maintain the plant's rich, dark foliage.
It will adapt to somewhat lower light levels, although growth may become slower. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunshine through glass, particularly during the strongest part of the day.
Watering
Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then allow all excess water to drain away. Rubber Plants prefer a regular wet-to-dry watering cycle and should not be left sitting in permanently wet compost.
Water less frequently during autumn and winter when growth slows. If in doubt, it is generally better to wait another day than to keep the roots continually wet.
Humidity & Temperature
Ficus elastica adapts well to normal household humidity and prefers warm, stable indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts, frequently opened exterior doors and direct heat from radiators.
Rubber Plants can react to sudden changes in position or temperature, so once you find a spot where yours is growing happily, try to keep its conditions relatively consistent.
Feeding
Feed regularly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.
Growth & Care
‘Abidjan’ has a naturally upright growth habit and can eventually develop into an impressive indoor tree. New leaves emerge rolled from the growing tip before opening into the plant's characteristic broad, glossy foliage.
Occasionally wipe the leaves gently with a soft damp cloth to remove dust and keep their naturally glossy surface looking its best. Turn the plant every few weeks if necessary to encourage balanced growth towards the light.
Why You'll Love It
- Large glossy leaves in deep green, burgundy and near-black tones
- Rich bronze-red colouring on fresh growth
- Strong, architectural upright shape
- Easy-going once established in the right position
- Can develop into an impressive statement houseplant
- A darker, more dramatic alternative to the classic green Rubber Plant
Pet & Child Safety
Ficus elastica is toxic if eaten, and its milky latex sap can cause skin or mouth irritation. Keep out of reach of pets and young children, and wash your hands after pruning or handling damaged stems.
