Cissus 'Ellen Danica'

Cissus rhombifolia ‘Ellen Danica’, commonly known as Grape Ivy or Oak Leaf Ivy, is a lush houseplant with glossy, deeply lobed green leaves and graceful trailing stems. Its layered foliage brings texture to shelves and hanging displays, or it can be trained upwards around a support.

Supplied in a 17cm diameter nursery pot with stems approximately 40cm or longer, ‘Ellen Danica’ makes a generous leafy feature. Allow it to cascade from a high shelf or place it on a plant stand where its stems have room to develop.

What Makes ‘Ellen Danica’ Special?

The distinctive lobed leaves give this variety its Oak Leaf Ivy nickname. Its branching stems create a soft, full display, while curling tendrils help it grip a support when grown as a climber.

Despite its common name, it is not a true ivy. Cissus belongs to the Vitaceae family, making it a relative of the grapevine.

Light & Position

Choose bright to moderate indirect light. It tolerates light shade, making it useful for positions away from the sunniest windows.

Avoid prolonged strong sunshine, which can scorch the foliage, and very dark corners where growth may become sparse.

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to begin drying before watering again. Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away.

Aim for lightly moist rather than constantly wet compost during active growth. Reduce watering in winter and never leave the pot standing in water.

Humidity & Temperature

Normal household conditions are generally suitable, although it appreciates some additional humidity in dry rooms. Keep away from radiators and cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed approximately monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer's dilution instructions. Reduce or stop feeding when growth slows.

Pruning & Repotting

Pinch out growing tips or shorten long stems to encourage a fuller shape. Guide climbing stems gently onto a suitable support.

Repot when the roots fill the container, generally every two to three years. Use free-draining, peat-free compost and move up just one pot size.
