add a pot to fit this plant

Chlorophytum comosum 'Bonnie', commonly known as the Curly Spider Plant, is a compact twist on the classic Spider Plant. Its arching green and cream-striped leaves naturally curl and twist, creating a full, playful shape that's particularly effective on shelves, plant stands and in hanging planters.

'Bonnie' can also produce slender arching stems carrying small white flowers followed by baby Spider Plants or 'spiderettes'. As these develop, they cascade around the parent plant and can be left in place for a fuller display or propagated to make new plants.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light but is remarkably adaptable and will tolerate some shade. Good indirect light encourages compact growth and strong variegation. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch or bleach the foliage.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of compost has begun to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Spider Plants are fairly forgiving of the occasional missed watering and are much happier slightly dry than sitting permanently in wet compost. Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and does not require particularly humid conditions. Keep in normal indoor temperatures and away from cold draughts. Brown leaf tips can occasionally develop in very dry conditions or where there is a build-up of minerals in the compost.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a diluted liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing.

Why You'll Love It

  • Distinctive curly green and cream variegated foliage
  • Compact form compared with many traditional Spider Plants
  • Easy-going and forgiving houseplant
  • Can produce cascading baby Spider Plants that are easy to propagate
  • Ideal for shelves and hanging planters
  • Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs

Pet Friendly

Spider Plants are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making 'Bonnie' an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.

Care Instructions

Light

Prefers indirect bright light and will tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or evening. If positioned in a shadier spot the plant will offer less growth and require less water.

Water

Thoroughly water, then allow the top few centimeters of compost to dry before re-watering. Water less in winter when the plant is growing more slowly. Over-watering can cause root rot.

Food

Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.

Humidity

This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
