Calluna vulgaris Garden Girls® ‘White’

Calluna vulgaris Garden Girls® ‘White’ is a compact, hardy evergreen heather with masses of crisp white flower buds held above neat green foliage. Its fresh, understated colour makes it particularly easy to use in autumn pots, window boxes and doorstep displays, either on its own or combined with other seasonal plants.

Unlike traditional flowering heathers, Garden Girls® are specially bred bud bloomers. Their colourful buds remain tightly closed rather than opening fully, helping them hold their colour for much longer through autumn and into the colder months.

At approximately 25cm tall in a 12cm nursery pot, ‘White’ is ideal for patio pots, window boxes, doorstep displays and mixed autumn containers, or it can be planted permanently into suitable acidic garden soil.

Light & Position

Grow outdoors in full sun for the strongest colour and most compact growth. It will tolerate some light partial shade, although a brighter position is preferable.

Soil & Planting

Calluna is an acid-loving plant and grows best in well-drained acidic soil. If growing in a container, use an ericaceous compost.

If your garden soil is alkaline or chalky, growing your heather in a pot of ericaceous compost is usually the simplest option.

Watering

Keep the compost reasonably moist, particularly while the plant is establishing or when grown in a container. Water when the surface begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely.

Avoid allowing a small container to dry out completely for prolonged periods, but equally do not leave the plant standing in waterlogged compost.

Autumn & Winter Colour

The white buds create a bright, clean display that works beautifully alongside richer autumn shades, evergreen foliage and seasonal grasses. Because the flower buds remain closed rather than opening fully, they retain their colour for an unusually long period through autumn and into the colder months.

This makes ‘White’ particularly useful for seasonal containers when many summer plants have finished flowering, while its evergreen foliage continues to provide structure after the main colour display has faded.

After Winter

This is a hardy perennial evergreen shrub, not a disposable seasonal bedding plant. Once the main display has finished, lightly trim the old flowering growth in spring to help keep the plant compact and encourage fresh new shoots. Avoid cutting deeply into old woody stems.
