Calathea ‘White Fusion’ is one of the most distinctive variegated prayer plants, with beautifully marbled leaves combining dark green, pale green and creamy white. Each leaf has its own unique pattern, while the softly waved edges and pinkish-purple undersides add another layer of colour and contrast.
Supplied in a generous 14cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 40cm tall, ‘White Fusion’ forms a lush, compact clump of foliage and makes a striking feature on a plant stand, side table or shelf. Its intricate variegation makes it particularly eye-catching among other green houseplants.
What Makes ‘White Fusion’ Special?
Unlike many patterned Calatheas, ‘White Fusion’ produces an irregular marbled variegation rather than a repeated stripe or leaf pattern. No two leaves are exactly alike, with areas of white, pale green and deeper green appearing in different combinations across each plant.
The cultivar arose from Goeppertia lietzei, a tropical species native to eastern Brazil. Young leaves can be particularly rippled or undulating as they unfurl before gradually settling into their mature shape.
Why Do the Leaves Move?
Like other members of the prayer plant family, ‘White Fusion’ can noticeably raise and lower its leaves in response to changing light levels. The leaves often become more upright during the evening before opening out again during the day.
This natural movement is sometimes referred to as the plant's prayer habit and makes Calatheas particularly fascinating houseplants to grow.
Light & Position
Calathea ‘White Fusion’ grows best in bright, indirect light. Its heavily variegated foliage benefits from good light, but the pale areas of the leaves are particularly susceptible to scorching in strong direct sunshine.
An east- or north-facing position can work very well, or place the plant a little further back from a brighter south- or west-facing window. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun.
Watering
Keep the compost lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to begin drying slightly before watering again. Avoid letting the root ball become completely dry for prolonged periods.
Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the nursery pot standing in water, as consistently saturated compost can lead to root problems.
Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals present in hard tap water. If you notice persistent brown leaf tips, using rainwater or filtered water may help.
Humidity & Temperature
‘White Fusion’ appreciates higher humidity and is an excellent choice for a bright bathroom or kitchen. It can also grow successfully elsewhere in the home, particularly when grouped with other plants or kept away from very dry sources of heat.
Warm, stable temperatures suit it best. Aim for around 18–25°C and keep the plant away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature.
Feeding
Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the recommended dilution on the packaging.
Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
Brown or Crispy Leaf Edges
Calatheas are naturally more particular about their environment than some easier houseplants, and occasional brown leaf tips are not unusual.
Very dry air, inconsistent watering, strong direct sunlight or mineral-rich tap water can all contribute to crispy edges. Keeping conditions reasonably stable is more important than trying to maintain constantly wet compost.
Repotting
Repot when the roots have filled the existing nursery pot, usually moving up by only one pot size at a time. Use a good-quality, moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost.
Spring and early summer are generally the best times to repot, when the plant is entering its most active period of growth.

Pet & Child Safety
Calatheas are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making ‘White Fusion’ an excellent choice for homes with pets. As with any houseplant, it is still sensible to discourage pets or young children from chewing the foliage, as consuming plant material can cause digestive upset.

Water
Thoroughly water, then allow the top 3 to 4cm of compost to dry before re-watering. Water less in winter when the plant is growing more slowly. Over-watering can cause root rot.
Food
Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.
Humidity
This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water.
