Begonia rex 'Indian Summer'

Begonia rex 'Indian Summer', commonly known as a Painted Leaf Begonia, is a spectacular foliage houseplant with richly coloured, iridescent leaves in warm shades of copper, pink-red, burgundy, silver and deep green. Dark veining and changing tones give the foliage an almost painted appearance, making every plant slightly different.

Part of the Rex Begonia group, 'Indian Summer' is grown primarily for its dramatic leaves rather than its flowers. Its compact, bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for shelves, desks, side tables and plant displays where its colour and texture can really be appreciated.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light helps maintain the richest foliage colour, but avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. It will also tolerate some gentle shade, although growth and colouring may become less pronounced in very low light.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly moist during spring and summer, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly and let excess water drain away; Rex Begonias dislike sitting in soggy compost. Reduce watering during winter and allow the surface of the compost to dry before watering again.

Where possible, water the compost directly rather than wetting the leaves or crown, as consistently damp foliage can encourage fungal problems.

Humidity & Temperature

Begonia rex 'Indian Summer' appreciates moderate to higher humidity, but good air circulation is equally important. Avoid regularly misting the foliage. Keep in normal warm indoor conditions and away from cold draughts, ideally above approximately 13°C.

Feeding

Feed during the active growing season from spring to early autumn with a suitable diluted houseplant fertiliser, following the recommended dose on the product.
