Why Is My Plant Crying? Understanding Guttation in Houseplants
Have you noticed mysterious droplets of water forming on the tips of your plant’s leaves? It can look like your plant is crying — but don’t worry, your leafy friend isn’t upset with you!
This natural phenomenon is called guttation and it’s a completely normal part of plant biology.
What Is Guttation?
Guttation is the process by which a plant releases excess water through small structures at the edges of its leaves, known as hydathodes. Unlike dew, which forms due to condensation from the air, guttation is water that is pushed out from inside the plant — usually overnight or early in the morning.
It typically happens when:
-
The soil or compost is very moist (often after watering)
-
The plant is in a humid environment
-
There are temperature fluctuations between night and day
The root system builds up pressure, especially when the plant is absorbing more water than it needs. That pressure forces water out through the leaves, where you’ll see it as tiny clear (and sometimes slightly sticky) droplets. You’re most likely to notice this on common houseplants like Peace Lilies, Calatheas, and Monsteras.
Is Guttation Harmful to My Plant?
In most cases, guttation is completely harmless. It’s simply a sign that your plant is well-hydrated (maybe even a little too hydrated).
However, if the water drips repeatedly onto the same lower leaves, it can occasionally create damp conditions that may encourage fungal or bacterial infections. Signs of this include:
-
Yellow or brown leaf spotting
-
A sticky or crusty residue on leaves
-
Wilting or leaf damage in isolated areas
If you notice these symptoms, it may be helpful to reduce watering slightly and improve air circulation around the plant.
What Should I Do if My Plant Is “Crying”?
There’s no need to panic. If your plant is producing guttation droplets:
-
Check the soil moisture to ensure it’s not waterlogged
-
Consider moving the plant to a less humid spot
-
Allow the top layer of compost to dry out slightly between waterings
Think of guttation as your plant’s way of communicating. It’s just saying, “I’m full!”
